Opening Ceremonies

Opening Ceremonies will take place at NES on Thursday, March 26 @ 5:30pm. Zone Champions are asked to bring their Hockey Alberta Zone Championship banner, so it may be incorporated into the ceremony.

As two teams will have just played, and two more teams will be playing immediately following the ceremony, players will be dressed in their full equipment.  The South Central Zone representatives, having played earlier in the day, have the option of dressing in full equipment, or in their off-ice attire and jersey.

A representative from the host committee will be available to confirm team logistics and any other details at the arena on opening day.

Tournament Rules

The Provincials will be played under the official Hockey Canada Rules with the exception of regulations and/or rules adopted by Hockey Alberta.

Round-robin Games

During each game of round-robin play, the winning team shall be awarded 2 points and the losing team will receive 0 points.  Tied games will end after regulation play, and each team will be awarded 1 point.

Championship Games - Sunday, March 29th (1st vs. 2nd and 3rd vs 4th)

Championship Games must decide a winner. In the case of a tied game in the Championship, Hockey Canada Official Playing Rules will apply as follows::

(A) If at the end of the three regulation twenty minute periods the score is tied, the following shall take place:

(I) if the Referee feels it is necessary, he may order the ice to be resurfaced at the end of the three regulation periods. If the ice is not resurfaced, the teams will not change ends;

(II) the puck shall be faced off at centre ice and the play shall continue with a ten minute sudden victory overtime period;

(III) if the score is still tied after the sudden victory ten minute overtime period, the teams would take a normal between period break and return to play twenty minute sudden play periods. The teams will now change ends.

(B) Any overtime period shall be considered part of the game and all unexpired penalties shall remain in force.

(C) If either team declines to play in the necessary overtime period or periods, the game shall be declared a loss for that team.

Protests will not be entertained on the outcome of any FINAL Championship game.

Please see Hockey Alberta Bylaws, Section B. Minor Hockey, Clause 9.3 Provincial Tournament Regulations for roster, round-robin tie-breaking formulas, and other rules in effect for Provincial Tournament play (link provided here): 2019 Minor Hockey By-Laws
